Blogs vs. Wikis

Although both blogs and wikis can be created to allow users to write about the same things, they differ.Blogs allow users to communictae by comments. It allows the information on that page to be controlled by the maker. The people who post on this page, will be known. According to MICHAEL WILSON of The New York Times, “A group of people who did not know each other came together and traded information.” This article shows us that people who did not know each other, were connected to each other because of the neighborhood they lived in and the information that they seemed to know. Daily, strangers posted to their blog about the one thing they all had in common, the dislike for what went on in a house in their neighborhood. While blogs have more controls, Wikis allow more freedom. Wiki allow users to edit the content on any given Wiki page. Here, anyone can change the information on this page. Margaret Locher says "Because his team had the most current information, they were able to make better decisions and get the project done faster." In this article, a team at work uses a Wiki page for projects. Margret Locher tells us that by using Wikim they were more able to "store documents, create logs and encourage discussions." Wikis can be used in places like businesses that have more than one location so that the ideas of these different people from different locations can be collaborated and shared.

Old vs. New

“New media” can be distinguished from “old” media. New Media is more advanced than old media, while it offers many different ways for the users to interact. Old media can be seen as news papers, radio, TV, film, and photography. New media has changed to blogs, podcasts, webisodes, and youtube. The two can be distinguished by examining what makes greater use of the new technology and what provides the user with more involvement.while the old media is has more traditional ways of communicating, the new media joins together the masses of communication, making it easier to say anything with less restrictions.

Privacy on the Interent

With each new technology, we are faced with both positive and negative consequences. Taking a look at the internet, we ask ourselves, does privacy exist on the web? Sure, we can protect ourselves from certain things on the web, but from everything? Do cookies help us, or save our information so other users can get to it? When using the applications on the I phone, does it allow a third part access to your information?
Everyday people use networking sites to socialize and network. Lets take a look at Facebook. Facebook is a social networking site, among others, that has more than 350 million active users. Although this site owned by Facebook, third parties play a role in the making of the site. With the addition of new applications to ones wall on Facebook, it enables the owner of that application to gain access to your profile, friends, and even information about you. Although the Terms of Use agreement on Facebook does not allow the application owners to do that, there is no way to stop this from happening. So now the important question is, what happens with the information that the third party has gained?

What is New Media?

New Media is a term that was coined in the later part of the 20th century, that represents the emergence of the digital technologies. Some examples of these technologies are websites, the internet, DVDS, and computer multimedia. It is because of new media that the world is where it is today. Due to new media, we can now communicate with people next door or on the other side of the world, without actually seeing them in person or interacting with them in person. The internet is very important to the new media because they go hand in hand. Without the internet, it would not be possible to read the news online instead of on paper, or communicate with someone without actually driving somewhere to meet them. Without the internet, it would not be possible to create blogs or wikis, or use other forms of social media.
According to Stephen Brook, The Guardian in “Michael Jackson: how celebrity gossip site TMZ got scoop of the decade”, he shows us how the world relies on new media and that the old media is replaced. When Michael Jackson died, it was posted on the TMZ website only 18 minutes after it had occurred. It is amazing that minutes after an event occurs, the world is notified, and they do not have to wait to read it in the paper the next morning or wait until the 10:00 news at night. This shows us how the old media is being enhanced in one way, and being replaced in another. The old media is being enhanced because news, whether it be a worldwide event or a personal matter, is traveling faster then ever. The old media is being replaced because now a days more people depend on getting news faster rather than waiting for it. Thanks to the new media, we no longer have to watch shows on TV, we can now watch them on computers using the internet.
